Check your Viber backup before you restore

Restore is not a refresh. Restoring a Viber backup reverts your chat list to the exact state of that backup — messages received since then won't be saved. Check the backup's date, the storage account and whether media was included before you tap Restore. Android backs up to Google Drive, iPhone to iCloud.

  • Same number + account
  • Check the date first
  • Restore overwrites newer

What backup do you actually have?

An enabled cloud account and a completed, suitable backup are not the same thing. Pick your situation.

What backup do you actually have?
Your backup:

Restore, checking the date

Confirm the last completed date and that photos/videos were included, then restore with the same number and storage account.

Weigh the date gap

Restoring reverts to the backup state; anything received since then won't be saved. Preserve recent messages you need before restoring.

Direct transfer, not restore

With both phones on the same platform and Viber 25.0+, a direct Wi-Fi transfer moves the history without a backup.

Transfer options

Check the backup before you restore

  1. Find the backup's date and contents

Open Viber's backup screen and check the last completed date and whether photos and videos were included (there's a single all-or-nothing media toggle).

  2. Confirm the storage identity

Restoring works only with the same phone number and the same Google Drive or iCloud account that made the backup.

    1. Settings
    2. Account
    3. Viber Backup
  3. Decide deliberately before tapping Restore

Restore is a data-changing action, not a harmless refresh. If the consequence is unclear, postpone it and re-read the official reference.

    Restore = overwrite

Why restoring can cost you newer messages

Picture the timeline: the backup froze your chats at one moment. Restoring winds the clock back to that moment and drops everything after it.

Restoring reverts your chats to the backup's date Messages between your last backup and the moment you tap Restore are not saved; the chat list returns to the exact state of the backup. The consequences to know before you tap Restore

Restore reverts to the backup state. Viber warns that messages received between your last backup and the moment you tap Restore will not be saved — your chat list returns to the exact state of the backup.

Media is all-or-nothing. The backup has a single include-photos-and-videos toggle. Hidden and secret chats, and outgoing photos and videos, aren't backed up.

Each new backup deletes the previous one. Viber keeps 1 backup per account at a time — a fresh backup overwrites the last, so you can't keep several dated copies. If you have no backup at all, a direct Wi-Fi transfer needs both phones on Viber 25.0+ and the same platform.

You can't restore an Android backup onto an iPhone or vice-versa — platform and account must match.

No backup means no hidden server copy

If you never enabled a backup and the old phone is gone, there is no archive to restore. Payment does not create a data source, and no “recovery” tool can rebuild deleted conversations from a number.

  • They promise: “We'll recover chats you never backed up.”Without a backup or the old device, there's nothing to restore from. A seller asking for money or cloud credentials is after those, not your chats.

We can't merge two histories or manufacture a backup — and we never ask for your cloud password.

Frequently asked questions

  • Does a cloud subscription prove my chats are backed up?

No. An enabled account isn't a completed backup. Open Viber's backup screen and check the last completed date and whether media was included before you rely on it.

  • Will restoring delete my recent messages?

It can. Restoring reverts your chat list to the backup's state, so messages received after that backup aren't saved. Preserve anything recent you need before you restore.

  • My text came back but photos didn't. Why?

The backup uses a single photos-and-videos toggle. If media wasn't included, a restore brings text without the attachments. Check what your backup actually contained.

  • Can I restore an Android backup on an iPhone?

No. Backups are tied to the platform, the same phone number and the same storage account. Android uses Google Drive and iPhone uses iCloud; they don't cross over.

  • I have no backup. Is there any other way?

If the old phone still works and both phones are on the same platform with Viber 25.0+, a direct Wi-Fi transfer can move the history. Otherwise, chats without a backup or surviving device can't be recovered.

  • Can VbSpy restore my chats or find a lost backup?

No. We explain Viber's own backup and restore steps. We can't access your Google Drive or iCloud, and we never ask for those credentials.
