Move Viber to a new phone: choose the right history source

Match the route to your phones. A nearby old phone and an existing cloud backup are different starting points. Viber's direct Wi-Fi transfer needs two phones on the same platform running version 25.0 or higher; there's no history transfer between Android and iOS. If the old phone is gone, you restore from a backup instead.

Which transfer route fits your phones?

The right method depends on the two devices. Pick the closest match.

Which transfer route fits your phones?
Your two phones:

Direct Wi-Fi transfer

If both run Viber 25.0+ with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on, scan the QR to move history directly between the phones.

Transfer steps

No cross-platform history

Viber doesn't move chat history between Android and iOS. Activate fresh on the new phone and keep the old one for anything you must save.

Restore from backup

Without the old phone, direct transfer isn't available. Restore from a matching cloud backup with the same number.

Backup & restore

Direct Wi-Fi transfer, step by step

This route moves the history between the phones directly — it is not a QR login and doesn't use the cloud.

  1. Check both phones meet the requirements

Same platform, Viber 25.0 or higher, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled, and the same phone number on the new phone.

  2. Start the transfer and scan the QR

Follow the transfer prompt in the official app and scan the QR code shown. Only use the QR displayed on your own two phones.

    1. New phone
    2. Transfer chat history
    3. Scan the QR on the old phone
  3. Verify before wiping the old phone

Open the conversations that matter and confirm they arrived before you trade in or erase the source phone. A successful activation is not proof the transfer finished.

    Verify, then wipe

The three ways history can move

Only one route needs the old phone; only one carries the full history live. Knowing which you're on prevents a false “it transferred” assumption.

Three ways Viber chat history can move to a new phone Direct Wi-Fi transfer needs the old phone and the same platform on Viber 25.0 or higher; cloud restore needs a backup and the same number; desktop is not a backup. The limits to keep in mind

Activation isn't proof the transfer finished. Signing in on the new phone doesn't mean the history moved. A direct transfer needs both phones on Viber 25.0+; check the important chats before you erase or trade in the old phone.

Android and iOS history can't be merged. Viber states there's no way to transfer chat history between the two platforms. Plan the switch without that expectation.

Mind the activation limits mid-switch. Re-activating the number on the new phone uses a code: 3 tries, then a 24-hour wait. Keep both phones ready so you don't trigger that window partway through.

No QR from a stranger moves your chats

The only legitimate QR is the one shown on your own two phones during the transfer. A code or link sent by someone else is a session-hijack attempt, not a shortcut.

  • They promise: “Scan this QR and we'll copy your Viber for you.”Scanning a stranger's QR can link your account to their device. Use only the transfer prompt on your own phones, with the requirements confirmed.

We never move your chats for you and never provide a QR — the only real one is on your own two phones.

Frequently asked questions

  • Must every transfer use a cloud backup?

No. If both phones are on the same platform and run Viber 25.0 or higher, a direct Wi-Fi transfer moves the history without the cloud. Cloud restore is the route when the old phone is gone.

  • Can I move my chats from Android to iPhone?

Not the chat history. Viber doesn't transfer history between Android and iOS, by either direct transfer or restore. Your account activates with the same number, but the old conversations won't carry over.

  • What version of Viber do I need?

The direct Wi-Fi transfer needs both phones on Viber 25.0 or higher, with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled and the same phone number on the new phone.

  • Is a QR code from a helper enough to transfer?

No — and it's dangerous. The only valid QR is the one shown on your own two phones during transfer. A QR from someone else can hand them access to your account.

  • How do I know the transfer actually worked?

Open several important conversations on the new phone and confirm they're there before you erase or trade in the old phone. Activation alone doesn't prove the history moved.

  • Can VbSpy transfer my history for me?

No. We're a guide, not a transfer tool. We explain Viber's own direct-transfer and backup routes so you can do it safely on your own devices.
